Three ways to get meeting notes
| Recording bot | Built-in platform transcription | Record on your computer (Scrieb) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Joins the call | Yes, as a participant | No | No |
| Others see it | In the participant list | Usually a recording banner | Nothing in the meeting; tell people yourself |
| Needs host permission or a paid plan | Often | Often a paid plan, and the host enables it | No |
| Where the audio is processed | The bot vendor’s servers | The platform’s cloud | Your own computer |
| Works across Zoom, Teams, Meet | Usually | One platform each | Any meeting app |
| In-person meetings | ✗ | ✗ | ✓ |
How to do it in Scrieb
- Install Scrieb and pick a speech model. It downloads once; after that, transcription works offline.
- Join your meeting as usual in Zoom, Teams, Meet or any other app.
- Click “Record from App”. Scrieb records the meeting audio and your microphone on your computer. On a Mac, allow Screen Recording the first time; macOS requires it to capture another app’s audio.
- Stop when the meeting ends. The transcript appears with each speaker labelled; rename them once and every line follows.
- Read the summary, ask questions, export. The Meeting summary lists decisions and action items. Ask the chat across all your meetings, and export to Word, PDF, text or Markdown.
Zoom, Teams and Google Meet
Zoom
Record the call with “Record from App”, or transcribe a Zoom recording you already have. Zoom recordings.
Microsoft Teams
No Teams recording or transcription policy needed, because nothing happens in Teams itself. Teams recordings.
Google Meet
Meet records only on paid Workspace plans; recording on your computer works on any account. Google Meet recordings.
In person
Record the microphone only, from the app or the menu bar, for meetings around a table.
Why people avoid meeting bots
- Clients notice them. A bot in the participant list changes how people talk, and some clients ask for it to be removed.
- The audio leaves your company. A bot vendor records and processes the call on its servers, which can conflict with GDPR, client confidentiality or professional secrecy.
- Company policy blocks them. Many organisations block unknown bots from joining Teams or Zoom calls.
Recording on your own computer avoids all three, but consent still matters: let participants know you are recording. More on the legal side: GDPR and transcription.

Frequently asked questions
- How can I get meeting recordings without a bot in the meeting?
- Record the meeting on your own computer instead of inviting a recording bot. An app like Scrieb captures the meeting audio and your microphone from your Mac or PC, so nothing joins the call, and then transcribes the recording on the same computer. It works with Zoom, Teams, Google Meet and any other meeting app.
- Can I get AI meeting notes without a bot?
- Yes. After the recording, Scrieb writes the transcript with speaker labels and a meeting summary with decisions and action items, on your computer. You can also ask questions across all your recorded meetings.
- Will the other participants see that I am recording?
- Scrieb does not join the meeting or announce itself, so nothing appears in the participant list. Tell people you are recording and get their consent where the law requires it, as with any recorder.
- Do I need the host’s permission or a paid Zoom, Teams or Meet plan?
- No meeting-platform permission or paid plan is needed, because the recording happens on your computer rather than in the meeting service. You still need the participants’ consent where the law requires it.
- What do I need on a Mac?
- macOS asks for the Screen Recording permission the first time you use “Record from App”, because that is how macOS lets an app capture another app’s audio. Without it, Scrieb records your microphone only and says so in the recording bar. Recording the microphone alone does not need the permission.
- Does it work if the others play through my speakers?
- Yes. When your microphone also picks up the other person from your speakers, Scrieb removes that echo when the recording is finished. Headphones give the cleanest result.
- Does it work for in-person meetings?
- Yes. Record the microphone only, from the app or the menu bar. The recording is written to disk as it happens, so long meetings are safe.
- Is it free?
- The free plan includes 1 hour of recording a day, with speaker labels, summaries and all export formats. Pro removes the limit and covers Mac and Windows with one licence.
